Glen Leverington

Glen Marvin Leverington, age 93, of rural Pine River died peacefully March 26, 2013. He was born June 26, 1919 in Moose Lake Township, Cass County, MN to Leslie and Josephine (Sandstrom) Leverington. The family moved to Bungo Township west of Pine River when he was 8 months old. He attended the rural Huffman School and graduated from Pine River High School in 1937. To further his education, he took correspondence courses in business and electrical work from both Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis and The Franklin Institute in New York. Glen married "the love of his life" Rena Brush September 27, 1941 whom he had met at a school carnival in 1938.

Glen was involved in numerous community activities including: member of Maple Hill Lutheran Church where he served on various committees throughout his life, helped establish the Minnesota Cattlemen's Association along with several other local cattlemen, was a board member for Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Services (ASCS), served as Chairman of Farmers Township Mutual Insurance Company Board of Directors, held a Pine River School Board seat for 16 years and served as Chairman when the original portion of the present school was built.

Throughout Glen's working years, in addition to farming, he worked at several jobs including cutting and loading pulp wood, hauling milk for the Pine River creamery, electrical wiring of several rural homes and farm buildings with the arrival of rural electricity in 1949, operating a cat-tractor on a mountain top wheat farm in Oregon, machine operator at Unipress in Minneapolis, and driving school bus for the Pine River Schools. He was also employed at the Montgomery Ward store in Brainerd for 20 years as Manager of the Home Improvement Department. In 1957 he and his wife started a Black Angus beef herd, and in the 1980's they built a new dairy barn for milking Holstein cows. He never really retired from farming and the farm is still in operation today by his youngest son.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Vivian, Lenora, Glorene, Vera and Erma, and one brother Elwin (Bud).

He is survived by his wife Rena of seventy one years and their three children Gerald (Karen) Leverington of Wadena, Carolyn (Duane) Blanck of Nisswa, Greg (Dana) Leverington of Pine River. Eight grandchildren: Karla (Rich) Guldseth, Dean (Debbie) Leverington, Janell (Steve) Madison, Daren (Michelle) Blanck, Danae (Jarrett) Anderson, Dawson (Lori) Blanck, Jenny Leverington and Kristy Leverington. Twelve great grandchildren: Krista and Jordan Guldseth, Grant and Calvin Madison, Ashley Ebel, Wyatt and Morgan Leverington, Elijah and Sophia Blanck, Jace Anderson, Landon and Kylin Blanck, sisters in-law Carol Staimbrook and Inez Leverington, and brother in-law Herb Hecht.

Glen has been a farmer all his life and always enjoyed living in Bungo Township. He loved his family, friends and the Lord. Other favorites of his included riding his four wheeler, checking on the cattle, operating tractors and machinery, cutting hay, driving a new car, square dancing and telling stories (or wind jamming as he would call it).

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday April 2nd at First Lutheran Church in Pine River with visitation 1 hour prior to the service; graveside services will follow at Maple Hill Lutheran Church at 5:00 pm. Visitation on April 1st will take place at the Kline Funeral Home from 5-8 pm with a special time to share memories. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Maple Hill Lutheran Church or Heritage Group North (Pine River Depot).
