George Merz

February 16, 1921 — July 1, 2015

George P. Merz, 94, of Baxter, died Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at the St. Cloud Veterans Hospital. Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. Family and friends are welcome to gather one hour prior to services. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Township Cemetery.

George was born February 16, 1921, in Newark, NJ, the son of Paul A. and Bertha (Gonter) Merz. Following high school, George enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 and served in the Asiatic and Pacific Theatres during WWII before being honorable discharged in 1945. George moved to Minneapolis after serving and in 1948 he married Dorothy Peterson. The couple made their home and raised their children in Fridley. George worked for 32 years as a machine operator for Soo Line Railroad. He retired in1981. In July of 1998, George and Dorothy moved to Baxter.

George was a member of American Legion. He enjoyed working on Model Railroads.

He will be missed and is survived by his daughters, Patricia (Dave) Jackson, of Baxter and Sandra Phelps, of Phoenix, AZ; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; son, Thomas; infant brother, Franklin; his parents; and son - in-law, Richard Phelps.
