George Hoting, 74, of Staples, MN passed into the arms of the Lord while surrounded by his loving family, on April 17, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer.
George was born on June 15, 1940 in Altona Township, Pipestone County, MN to Harm and Zena (Groen) Hoting. He spent his younger years in northern Iowa. In 1949, the family moved to a family farm north of Deer Creek, MN where he spent the remainder of his youth training horses and working with cars. He attended both Deer Creek Country School and Wadena High School, from which he graduated in 1958. George spent his years immediately following high school working primarily in the car business as both a mechanic and a gas station owner in Wadena. He married Patricia (Sorenson) Hoting on January 17, 1964 in Staples, MN. In 1972 George graduated from Brainerd Junior College with a pre-med degree. He worked a variety of jobs including being a welder, draftsman, car salesman, USDA turkey inspector, livestock nutritionist and rancher. He spent some of his happiest professional years as a veterinary technician and the "right-hand man" of Dr. James Schaefer at the Staples Veterinary Clinic. George also delighted in being the manager/booking agent/bus driver for the "Earth Angels Band", working and traveling in the "blue bus" with his daughters for 13 years. Later, he worked as a bus driver, and also head mechanic for the Staples-Motley School District. He semi-retired in 2009, but continued to work for the school district in various capacities until the spring of 2014. George had a special knack for being able to "MacGyver" anything and took delight in always teasing everyone! His favorite past times were tinkering in the garage, listening to classic country, building his 1949 custom "thunderbird" and bragging about his grandchildren, who christened him with the name "Bompy". His daughters were the luckiest girls in the world to have had such a supportive and loving father who never stopped working to better their lives.
"Bompy" is survived by Patricia (Pat) Hoting, his wife of 51 years; his daughters, Tanya (Joseph) Mrazek, JodyLynn (Nathan) Converse; four grandchildren, Samantha and Caden Mrazek, Colton and Dustin Converse, all of Motley, MN; sister, Aleida Hoting of Wadena, MN; and brother, Henry (Alice) Hoting of Willmar, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harm and Zena Hoting; one sister, Anna Semmler; one brother, Dick Hoting; and his infant daughter, Terri Ann Hoting. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples, MN. Services for George will be held at a later date.
