Garnet Rebecca Balstad DeVine passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024 in Moorhead, MN. Garnet was 100% Norwegian, her passing on the Syttende Mai was very appropriate.
Garnet was born March 21, 1925 in Sletten Township, MN. She was the 4 th of 5 children born to Henry and Olga (Olson) Balstad. Garnet graduated from the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, MN and had very special memories of her time at the AC. Following graduation, Garnet worked for her father on the farm and then moved to Grand Forks, ND where she was employed by Nodak Rural Electric. In the early 1950s, Garnet and a friend moved to Fargo, ND. While in Fargo, she met Douglas DeVine as she liked to say “On a blind date in an alley after church choir rehearsal.” Garnet and Douglas were married at First Lutheran Church in Fargo on November 2, 1957. Following their marriage, they lived in several communities and then settled in St. Paul where they lived for 20 years. Their weekends were spent traveling to the DeVine cabin on Bonnie Lake near Crosslake, MN. Garnet was employed by Hoerner Waldorf Company and became the Payroll Manager. She was one of only a few female managers in the Twin Cities at that time. In 1982, following retirement, Garnet and Douglas moved to the Chalet DeVine on Bonnie Lake. They became involved in Mission Township, Crosslake Lutheran Church and the Bonnie Lake Association. Garnet enjoyed spending her time painting, doing crossword puzzles, playing scrabble, reading, watching the Minnesota Twins, cooking
and preparing lovely meals for family and friends. She was a long-time member of the Loony Ladies book club in Nisswa.
Garnet and Douglas’s nieces and nephews were very important to them. They regularly hosted Cousin Gatherings at Chalet DeVine.
In 1999, they moved to Nisswa. Douglas passed away in 2009. In 2019, Garnet moved to Moorhead, MN to be near her niece Myrna. Special thank you to the staff at Riverpointe in Moorhead for the wonderful care they provided for Garnet.
Garnet was preceded in death by her husband Douglas, her parents, siblings Kenneth (Beatrice) Balstad, Harold (Ione) Balstad, Edna (Henry) Moen and Harriet (James) Hanson, nephews Harold (Sonnie) Balstad Jr., Mark Balstad and Michael Hanson and niece Vicki Lynne Moen. Tante Garnie as she was lovingly known is survived by her nieces and nephews Bonnie (Tom) Stich, Cheryl (David) Bubolz, John (Sandy) Balstad, Kay Balstad, Tennis (Lori) Balstad, LuAnn Hanson and Myrna Hanson, several great-nieces & nephews and cousins.
Garnet’s memorial service will be Saturday, July 13th at Crosslake Lutheran Church with visitation at 10 AM and service at 11 AM. Interment will be at Mission Township Cemetery. Garnet’s favorite color was yellow, please consider wearing a touch of yellow to her service.
Memorials are requested to Crosslake Lutheran Church for the Outdoor Worship Service that Garnet loved.
