Evelyn A. Hastings, age 68, of Onamia, died Sunday, March 12, 2006 at her home. Memorial services will be Friday, March 17, at 1 pm, at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, with Reverend Bob Twiton officiating. Burial will be at Red Lake, at a later date.
Evelyn Sumner was born April 19, 1937 in Red Lake, to Simon and Caroline (Beaulieu) Sumner. She grew up and attended school in Red Lake, and was Valedictorian of her graduating class. For two years, she attended Haskell Junior College in Lawrence, Kansas. She moved to Minneapolis, where she met her future husband, George Hastings. The couple was married in South Dakota on July 4, 1958. Together, they worked and raised four children. Evelyns family was the most important thing in the world to her. Even though she worked outside the home she always made time for her children. She recently remarked to her daughter, All my children are beautiful; theyre all gifts from God.A loving and generous woman, Evelyn placed the needs and wants of others before her own. She took great joy in helping others. She had a wonderful sense of humor and taught her children and grandchildren to be honest and kind to others. In her final days on this earth she instructed her children, You help each other out, now.
Evelyn is survived by George, her husband of 48 years; children George Hastings, Jr., Robert Hastings, Susan (Rory) Lieb, and Linda (John) Ulrick, all of Hillman; 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren (with another due any day); and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Services have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
