Eldora Butterfass

September 18, 1928 — February 12, 2024

Pequot Lakes

Eldora “Irish” Mae Butterfass, long time resident of Pequot Lakes, passed away peacefully in Crosslake, MN on February 12th 2024, at 95 years old.

Eldora was born in Norwood Young America, MN on September 18th, 1928.  She was the only child of John Butterfass and Mathilda (Knacke).

Eldora, who fondly went by the nickname “Irish”, worked for many years as an X-Ray technician at Fairview Hospital in downtown Minneapolis.  It was there she forged a lifelong friendship with her old pal, Lillie Smiley.

Looking towards retirement, she purchased a plot of land next to Lillie’s just outside of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota.  With the help of her father and dear friends she built her forever home, where she could continue her love of all things outdoors.

Irish was an avid duck hunter, fisherwoman, Vikings fan, and especially loved her pontoon rides. Living year-around “up north” is no easy feat, but Irish relished the challenge. She lovingly shared the fruits of her labor with multiple generations of friends and family.

In her final years, she wished to stay independent and remain in her home as long as possible. Without the help of a wonderful community of neighbors and Home Instead Senior Care, this simply would not have been possible.  In September 2023, Irish’s needs changed and she was ready for additional support provided at Golden Horizons in Crosslake.  The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Golden Horizons for providing Irish with a loving and safe place to spend her remaining days.

Irish is survived by numerous close friends spanning over decades; Bill Smiley, Sara Smiley Adams, Samantha Smiley Thompson, Ashley Smiley, Sue Smiley, Mike Powles, Jeff Hemler, Steve Allen, Dave Allen, Kathy Parkinson, Deb and Stu.  She was preceded in death by her parents John and Tillie Butterfass and friend Lillie Smiley.

Honoring Irish’s wishes, a private family gathering will be planned this Spring.

Arrangements are entrusted to Brenny Family Funeral Chapel, Crosslake.
