Effie Hofmann

February 27, 1922 — June 28, 2022

Effie Mae Hofmann, 100, passed away peacefully June 28, 2022 at Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby, Minnesota. She was born Feb 27, 1922 in McGregor, MN to William and Margaret Kant. The family moved to Crosby where Effie attended school, graduating from Crosby-Ironton High School.

After High School she worked at the Crosby Red Owl and began dating her future husband Dennis Hofmann. They married July 17, 1943. She had met the man of her dreams, but WWII interrupted their plans when Denny went to Europe with the Army. For a time, Effie worked in the ship yards in California where she welded on Liberty Ships. She was our own Rosie, the Riveter.

After the war they had two children and built their home and business together. She was a very active stay at home mom, who loved cooking, sewing, entertaining and volunteering. She was a Girl Scout Leader, a church basement lady at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, a PTA mom, and a part-time florist, all while tending to office work for Hofmann and Sons Construction and making a loving home for her family. She loved to dance, play bingo, bowl, travel, and any occasion for a party.

After Dennis passed in 1981, Effie moved to Arizona where she spent many happy years with family and friends before moving back to Crosby in December 2000. She resided at Heartwood’s Assisted where she loved the wonderful staff at Heartwood and the many friends that she made there.

Effie is survived by her son, Jim (Beverly Bayliss) Hofmann and daughter, Vicki (Dennis) Wier, six grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

She was proceeded in death by her loving husband Dennis A Hofmann, her brother William Kant, sisters Louise Meacham and Anna Glad, and her granddaughter Sherry Ann Hofmann. She is the last of her generation for both our Kant and Hofmann families.

Effie did not want the customary funeral and reception. In accordance with her wishes she was cremated at Brenny Family Funeral Chapel in Baxter followed by a Rite of Committal at Lakewood Cemetery. A mass will be said for her at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Crosby at a later date.

The family wants to thank everyone at Heartwood who made her final years so much fun, and the excellent staff at Cuyuna Range Medical Center who took such good care of her and were so kind and considerate in her final days.

In lieu of flowers the family has set up a memorial fund at Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity in Brainerd. Donations should be made payable to LAHFH with Effie Hofmann Memorial in the memo line. They can be sent directly to LAHFH, PO Box 234, Brainerd, MN 56401, or if you prefer, enclosed in a card and mailed to Jim Hofmann, 1103 3rd St SW, Crosby MN 56441.
