Edwin Peter Waterhouse, age 86, of Remer Minnesota, died on Sunday, July 17 at 12:15 a.m. at the Cuyuna Regional Medical Care Center. Ed was born on August 17, 1924 in Remer, Minnesota to Edwin and Mabel (Peterson) Waterhouse. He graduated from Longville High School in Longville, Minnesota in 1942.
After high school, Ed served in the army as a Technical Sergeant, stationed in the Philippines during WWII. His fascinating stories of his wartime experience were a reminder to us all why his was called "The Greatest Generation".
After the service, Ed attended Dunwoody Institute and studied to be an electrician. His first job was with Westinghouse in Chicago. But, Ed found his heart was still in Minnesota. So, he returned home and found a job with IBM, where he was a top salesman many years running. After he left IBM, Ed owned several companies, but his life-long passion for real estate made that his final career and the activity for which he is most known. His real estate activities and his deep love of Thunder Lake brought many people to the area, a good deal of whom ended up building their own homes and cabins and contributing to the local communities he knew and loved so well.
Ed loved music and dancing and spent some of the best times of his life on the dance floor - in and out of the war. He met his wife, Lorna Kloos, at the Prom Ballroom in St. Paul. They were married a year and a half later in a little church in Iowa on September 3, 1949. Over the next six years, they were blessed with three children, Scott, Jill and Susan. In the years to come, six grandchildren also graced the family and Ed enjoyed playing and sharing the joys of Thunder Lake with them. Sadly Ed and Lorna divorced in 1981, but they remained lifelong friends.
Ed loved hunting - ducks, geese and deer - all over Minnesota and Canada, and was an inveterate learner. He loved taking on new projects from raising dogs, horses and apple trees to making maple syrup and homemade jams. He was passionate about gardening and was always looking for that perfect ear of sweet corn.
Ed was also generous and helpful to others - he gave away much of his famous maple syrup and those homemade jams; snowplowed folks driveways, pulled cars out of ditches, and did just about anything anyone needed when asked.
You couldn't know Ed for any length of time without hearing a story. He had a great sense of humor and was a fabulous storyteller. His hunting stories - as well as those about his father and brothers, the war, and his IBM days - were legendary. He loved Thunder Lake and lived to see the fifth Waterhouse generation in the old family homestead. Thunder Lake was where his story started and ended - and the place that made him who he was.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Mabel Waterhouse; former wife Lorna, brothers Del and Grant Waterhouse, sister Fern Matteson, sister-in-law Ardis Waterhouse and brother-in-law Al Matteson. He is survived by children, Scott (Linda) Waterhouse of Grand Marais, Jill Waterhouse (Lester Joos) of Minneapolis, Sue (Steve) Carlson of Cambridge; his brothers Bob (Elaine) Waterhouse, Chuck (Dot) Waterhouse and sister-in-law Betty Waterhouse; six grandchildren, Seth (Ky) Waterhouse, Noah (Bethany) Waterhouse, Tryg (Annie) Waterhouse, Erin (Shawn) Naber, Blair Carlson, Zachary Carlson; and two great grandchildren, Joy and Hartley Waterhouse; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Bethany Lutheran Church, 18 Cedar Street NW, in Remer, Minnesota; Pastor Dale Degner officiating, 218-566-2482. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
