Edward Henry Fox was born August 18, 1927 at the home of his parents Vernon and Lena Fox in Ghent, Minnesota. He was one of 13 children in the family. He died peacefully on October 7, 2018 at Edgewood Vista.
After graduating from high school in 1945 he was drafted into the US Army. He served a short stint in the service and then attended college at St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota. It was during this time he met Evelyn Laleman and they were married in 1950. In 1953 he graduated with a BS degree for teaching business subjects from Mankato State University. He went on to earn his MS degree.
In 1957 he accepted a teaching position at the Brainerd High School in the business department. On more than one occasion he was quoted as saying that it was the best place he had ever worked. Along with heading the Night School for the area, he helped as the Coordinator and ultimately as the Assistant Director for the Brainerd Area Vocational Technical Institute.
Ed enjoyed fishing a lot and shared this interest with his fellow workers and family whenever time allowed. He also carried a lifelong interest in photography that helped in all his work through teaching, publicity, administration, and raising a family. He loved music and loved to dance.
Ed was a loyal member of many local organizations including the Moose, American Legion, and Rotary. He had served as President of the Rotary, President of the Port Foundation, as a member on the CLC board, was a charter member of the St. Andrew’s Church where he was one of its first lectors and extraordinary ministers.
He started a foundation at the Technical College with Zuchi Ismer, and started the GED (General Education Development) and ABE (Adult Basic Education) programs in Brainerd.
Along with his wife Evie and their children he owned and ran the Gilbert Lake Resort for 31 years.
After retiring in 1987 Ed was a member of the Ageless Wonders softball and volleyball teams and volunteered for the Crow Wing County Fair for 25 years. They wintered in Texas for the past 21 years.
Ed is survived by his wife, Evelyn, and 9 children: Bruce (Carol) Fox, Roxann (Gary) Plombon, Jeff (Deb) Fox, Jim (Barb) Fox, Mark Fox, Mary Hurd and friend Joe, Karen (Dave) Fitch, Karla Fox, Angie (Mike) Lyonais, 23 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Preceding Ed in death were his parents, 6 siblings, son-in-law Dennis Hurd, grandsons Spencer Fitch and Michael Hurd and great-grandson George Edward Muck.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Andrew’s Catholic Church on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at 11:00. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to hospice or to local charities.
