Doris “Dori” Bohme, age 87, passed away April 6, 2025, at Whitefish at the Lakes.
Dori was born July 16, 1937, in Chicago to Mary and Frank Vondracek. She was the middle child in a family of seven children. She attended Corkery School in Chicago until second grade when her family moved to Cicero, a border suburb of Chicago. She graduated from Columbus School and shortly after the family moved to Harrodsburg, Kentucky. After graduating from Harrodsburg High School, Dori returned to Chicago and worked for a small neighborhood newspaper in Maywood, IL.
When her family moved back to Illinois, she rejoined them in Cicero and went to work for Illinois Bell Telephone Co. as a long-distance telephone operator, then worked in the Dial Service Chief’s office as a clerk and the Engineering Office. She left Illinois Bell and went to work for Sears Roebuck in the main headquarters in Chicago as a correspondent, handling mail order complaints.
In 1960, she married Charles D. Henderson, a Chicago Public School teacher. They had two children, Betsey and Linda.
Charlie passed away in 1970. Dori went to work as a teacher aide in Chicago Public School. She returned to school and graduated from Felician College with a two-year degree.
After taking an exam, she became a school clerk and remained in that position until retiring in 1997. She was also the secretary of the Pine River Area Food Shelf for several years.
In 1976, she married Alan Bohme, a Chicago Public School high school chemistry teacher. They celebrated 48 years together.
The Bohmes moved to Minnesota in 1997 after being summer visitors for twenty years.
Dori was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sister, Dick Vondracek, Rod Vondracek, and Jean Fleischman; and granddaughter, Julia Hana Magayon Alvarez.
Dori is survived by her husband, Alan; daughters, Betsey Larson (Don) and Linda Alvarez (Aurelio); sister, Carol (Illinois); brothers, Frank (Nancy) (Kentucky) and Art (Illinois); six grandchildren, Emma, Flynn, Lili, Phoebe, Ian (Merissa), and Ryan (Kate); great-grandchildren, Sophia, Ellie, Anthony, Riley, and Piper; and 18 nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 12PM-3PM on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at Brenny-Kline Funeral Home in Pine River. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Backus.
In lieu of flowers, donations to HART or Paws and Claws are appreciated.
Life was better because of her.
