Donald Knold, age 79, passed away on January 3, 2013, in Brainerd, MN, after a long battle of Huntington's Disease. Memorial services will be on Friday, April 19, 2013,
1 pm at Good Samaritan Society - Bethany, 804 Wright St, Brainerd, MN. Visitation will be a half hour before services. Interment at Minnesota State Veteran's Cemetery, Little Falls, MN.
Donald Duane Knold was born to Peter and Jennie (Johnson) Knold, on November 19, 1933, in Goodhue County, MN. He grew up in Kenyon and Faribault. Don attended Faribault HS, graduating with the class of '52. He received a degree in Education in 1956 from Drake University, teaching the following year at Urbandale HS. Don was united in marriage to Eleanor "Ellie" Barton on June 1, 1957 in Des Moines, Iowa.
He attended Marine Corps Officer Candidate School. After serving 2 years at Camp Pendleton, CA, he joined the reserves, retiring after 20 years, as Lieutenant Colonel. In 1960, Don returned to Drake University, for a Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling. He was a counselor at Brainerd HS, and then at Brainerd Vo-Tec College.
Don and Ellie hosted exchange students from China and Japan. After retiring, they traveled all over the world, including China, Japan, and Norway. He was a member of Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, and Sons of Norway.
Don is survived by Ellie, wife of 55 years; son, Richard Knold of New York, NY; daughter, Jennifer Rakow of Champlin, MN; sister, Rosella Adams of Seattle, WA; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ivan, Merton, Marvin and Carl; sisters Pearl and Mildred.
