Donald was born September 16, 1931 to Eddie and Laura (Peterson) Amundson in Wadena, MN. After the death of his father the family moved to Staples in 1943. He graduated from Staples High School in 1949. He was a proud veteran who enlisted in the National Guard and served in the Army during the Korean War 1948-1952. He was appointed a Lifetime Member of the 194th Tank Regiment. After working in several machine shops in the Minneapolis area, he moved the family to Staples in 1974 to work in the 3M plant. He retired after 20 years where he made many life long friends. Don was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance church of Staples. He faithfully served as an usher, elder, Sunday school teacher, and Awana leader. He loved cooking for men’s Saturday morning breakfast every month. The Monday morning men’s encouragement group was a highlight of his week for about 25 years. Don appreciated the outdoors so much he bought a camper to take his family camping. They enjoyed many holidays and weekends at Family Camp with church friends singing around the campfire. Everyone pitched in to set up camp and were one happy family crammed in the camper along with their dog, Chipper. He and his son Dan spent many hours on their land in Todd County. They made many memories in the woods hunting deer and ducks. They also made several trips to Colorado for elk. Being in the woods made him happy and he was even able to deer hunt last fall. He enjoyed fishing on many lakes in Minnesota and Canada. Lake Shamineau was his favorite. He spent a lot of time there getting his grandkids “hooked” on fishing. Don loved working on anything with an engine. From his first car (Model T), tanks in the military, snowmobiles, tractors and everything in between. Family was important to Don, he felt very blessed to spend quality time together. He often said how proud he was of his children and grand kids. Services have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples, MN.
