Don Schmidt

Don Schmidt, 89, joined Jesus on Saturday, April 5, 2025, surrounded by his family, ten days short of his 90th birthday.

Don was born to Art and Clara Schmidt on April 15, 1935 in Pine River, MN. He graduated from Pequot Lakes High School in 1953. Don married Myrt, his wife of 67 years, on November 23, 1957. He was a lifelong member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and knew Jesus had his place ready in heaven.

Don and Myrt were an adventurous couple, hunting, camping, and most importantly fishing, every chance they had. Don was known as the Pied Piper of the campgrounds, carrying his net full of walleyes to the fish cleaning house while sharing with everyone the honey hole he caught them in. Don was an incredible story teller and the amount of funny circumstances he experienced could have filled a book.

Don was proud of and greatly enjoyed his family. He is survived by his wife, Myrt; his faithful poodle companion, Charlie; son Steve Saxvold (Kathy); niece Lani Fagerstrom (John); granddaughters Carime Doughty (Jon) and Kayla Benzick (Justin); great grandchildren, Taylor, Hailey, Addie, and Ashton; sister-in-law Joyce (George) Scoles; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Marlene (Don) Fagerstrom.

Graveside service will be held at the Pequot Lakes Cemetery at 1:00 on Saturday, April 19, followed by a gathering at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes.

until my dying day,

And when it comes to my last cast,

I then most humbly pray,

when in the Lord’s great landing net

and peacefully asleep

That in his mercy I be judged
