Dee was born December 24, 1931 in Holdingford, MN, the fourth of 13 children of Philip and Theresa Opatz. She attended school in Holdingford. Dee worked in Minneapolis for many years before marrying Floyd "Red" Newcomb on 1-5-56 in Sioux Falls. After they married, they made their home in St. Louis Park where they lived for over 50 years and raised their daughter, Renee. Red and Dee enjoyed going fishing and were on a number of bowling leagues. Dee continued to work at The Boulevard for a few years after Renee was born, but then was able to become a stay-at-home wife and mom. She loved to cook; everyday she would make a big dinner (meat, potatoes, gravy and vegetables) for her family and there was always more food then needed. While Red worked, Dee would take care of their home; she planted tomatoes every year and would brag about how big her tomatoes grew. She also loved to can pickles and sauerkraut every year - hers were the best in town. She made a home in her basement for the many people from Randall that would work in Minneapolis or work on the Christmas tree lots they ran. She loved to play cards, especially beating Red at Cribbage. In 1986, she was blessed with a grandson, Sidney. Dee loved kids; she always wanted to play with them. If you needed a sitter, she was there. Sidney was a star in her eyes. After he was born she insisted she take care of him and made sure she was a big part of his life. When you would tell her that Sid was coming over she would get so excited. In 1989, Red and Dee built a retirement home at Round Lake in Randall, MN. Were they have enjoyed many gatherings with family and friends. Dee was very lucky. She enjoyed playing scratch offs and pull tabs. She would play and play and most often, she won. When she called her daughter to ask, "When can we go shopping?" Renee knew it was code for them to play pull tabs. She was a life time member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 9073 in Randall.
Dee is survived by her husband, Red Newcomb; her daughter, Renee (Dale) Roberts; grandson, Sidney Roberts; brothers, George (Della) Opatz, of Rice, MN, Edward (Elaine) Opatz, of Rice, MN, Bill (Shirley) Opatz, of Avon, MN, Lloyd Opatz, of Avon, MN, LeRoy (MaryJo) Opatz, of Avon, MN, Jack (Jane) Opatz, of St. Joseph, MN, and Gene (Ruth) Opatz, of Buffalo, MN; her sisters, Rita Venske, of Randall, MN, MaryAnn Wilson, of Little Falls, MN, Judy Rossel, of St. Cloud, MN, and Darlene Bursey, of Champlin, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
