Joseph David "Dave" Slater, age 65, of Hackensack, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014. He was born April 24, 1948, to Betty Frances (King) and Joseph Slater. Growing up in Onamia, Minnesota, Dave played football and baseball throughout high school. After graduating from Onamia High School, Dave joined the Air Force where he served two tours in Vietnam as a flight mechanic. After spending 30 years driving an automobile transport for Allied Systems, Dave retired and moved to Hackensack, Minnesota, where he relaxed and enjoyed his new found freedom.
Dave was an avid fan of many sports. He was especially dedicated to Minnesota Gopher Hockey and also enjoyed his time as a youth hockey coach. Never turning away a hungry creature, Dave fed any animal that entered his yard and created a home for his loving ferrets. Dave was an active member of the Hackensack American Legion where he served as adjutant for many years.
Dave is survived by his son, Ryan Slater in Cambridge, MN; his son, Joel Slater in Boise, ID; his daughter, Elizabeth Slater in Wabasha, MN; his granddaughter, Samantha Slater; his sisters Linda Slater in Missoula, MT, Mary Lou (Chuck) Plantz in Ely, MN, Sharon Gamache in Woodbury, MN, and Peg Slater in Prescott, WI; and other loving family and friends.
Services will be 12 Noon on Saturday, March 8, at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 8 PM at Kline Funeral Home, and also one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
