David Mertens, age 86, of Staples died Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at the Lakewood Care Center. Funeral services will be held on Friday morning at 10:30 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples with Father Peter Kirchner officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples. Relatives will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5 to 7. Parish Prayers will be said at 6:30 followed by the Rosary. Arrangements are pending with Brenny Funeral Home of Staples.
David Edward Mertens was born on April 8th, 1919 in Thomastown Township of Wadena County north of Staples to Carl and Lucy (Tils) Mertens. In November of 1943 he went into the US Army where he served in Europe during WWII. For over 40 years he worked for the railroad, most of those years as an engineer. He is survived by his wife; Violet Mertens, a son; Rod Mertens of Crosslake, a daughter; Gloria Perfetti of Staples, 2 brothers; Roy Mertens of Staples and Clarence Mertens of Staples, a sister; Ivy Grossman of Hibbing, 4 Grandchildren, and 1 Great Grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and a sister.
