Danny Walberg

Danny Lee Walberg, Sr., 73, of Pine River, died peacefully at his home on December 8, 2021. Memorial services will be held at the Trailside Baptist Church, Pequot Lakes, on Saturday, December 18, 2021, at 11:00 am. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Danny was born December 31, 1947, in Flandreau, South Dakota, to Carlyle and Jeanne Walberg. He attended school at the Trent School and was the last graduating class before the rural school closed. Danny lived and worked on the family farm until he graduated from high school in 1966 and enlisted in the United States Army. He was overseas until his discharge in 1969. He attended meat cutting school at Pipestone Vocational School. Danny was married to Loretta Gilliland in Pipestone, MN, in 1973 and moved to Pequot Lakes, MN. They had two children, Danny Jr., and Nathan, and resided in Pequot Lakes until 1990. Danny worked as a meat manager in Nisswa, MN, and later worked for a local body shop and learned that trade and started his own body shop in 1975. A few years later he purchased Totem Dock where he manufactured and installed dock systems for several years. During his time living in Pequot Lakes, Danny was a volunteer fireman for 16 years and was on the emergency ambulance crew. In 1989, he started working at the Potlach Corp. as an overhead crane operator in the paper making process. Danny loved to fish his whole life and his earlier years he was involved with the formation of the local bass fishing club and enjoyed participating in bass fishing tournaments and enjoyed hunting of all types.

Danny met his “accomplice” in life, Rosie Flategraff, in 2005. They shared a home together in rural Pine River. Rosie’s son, Curt and his wife Gina, lived in the house next door. During their time together they were actively involved in the Jenkins VFW, where Danny was a charter member and an officer for many years. Danny was also a member of the color guard. They enjoyed wintering in Pahrump, NV, where they made many friends and stayed active. They shared many activities together such as horseshoes, camping with friends and family, trap shooting, golf, cribbage, and their involvement with the DAV and American Legion.

Danny is survived by his “accomplice,” Rose Flategraff; children, Danny Jr. (Shannah), and Nathan (Danelle); grandchildren: Mason, Dylan, Lucas, Zachary, Alison, Jacob; great grandchild, Brantley; brother, Ricky (Sharon); sisters, Judy VandeVoorde (Mike) and Carla Schmidt (Terry); and Rosie’s son, Curt (Gina). He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Russ and Dale.

The family would like to extend special thanks to St. Croix Hospice for the exceptional care they gave Danny: a beloved father, family member and friend.  He will be dearly missed!
