Cleone A Sumey, age 85, of Staples, passed away at the Lakewood Care Center on Wednesday, May 16. A Funeral Mass is planned for Tuesday, May 22, at 11:00 AM, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, at the church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.
Cleone was born in rural Todd County, on May 13, 1927, to George and Clara (Adamek) Oldenburg. On August 31, 1943, she was united in marriage to Stanley Sumey in Motley, MN. Together they farmed and raised three children. Cleone also worked at the Carter-Ringer plant for many years, as well as at the Lakewood Health System, as a Dietary Aid for over 25 years. Cleone was a former member of St. Isadore's Catholic Church, then a member of Sacred Heart. She was a fantastic cook and baker, no one could beat her fried chicken. She enjoyed playing cards and was a member of the Homemaker's. She especially enjoyed spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Cleone is survived by her children, Karen (Ken) Hudalla of Rice, Sheila (Jerry) Rutten of Sauk Center, and Jeff (Deb) Sumey of Browerville; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 1 great, great-grandchild; a sister, Dolores Robinson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stan; her parents; and brothers, Morris and Keith.
