Chester ?Chet? Moen, age 86, of Fifty Lakes, died Thursday, July 07, 2005 at his home. Funeral services will be Monday, July 11, at 11 am, at Our Savior?s Lutheran Church in Outing, with Reverend Robert Atte officiating. Friends may visit Sunday, July 10, 6-8 pm, at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake, and at the church on Monday during the hour prior to services. Interment will be at Pinewood Cemetery in Crosslake.
Chester Edward Moen was born August 16, 1918 in Minot, North Dakota, to Odin and Cora (Bagaason) Moen. At a young age he moved with his family to Spring Grove, where he grew up on the family farm and graduated high school. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Agriculture College in 1937. He was drafted into the Army at the age of 23, and served in the 99th Battalion (Sep) from 1941 to 1946. He fought in five major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. He has continued to attend annual reunions with his fellow battalion members. Following his honorable discharge he did construction work for ten years. He was united in marriage to Doris Hicks, and the couple enjoyed 25 years together before Doris passed away. They moved full-time to his summer cabin on Eagle Lake in 1967. He owned and operated the Crosslake Laundromat from 1967 until retiring in 1974. Following retirement, he built a new home on his lake lot. He maintained a large garden each summer and cut wood for heating each winter. He was married to Betty Moen on March 9, 1996, in Outing. Chet and Betty were active members of Our Savior?s Lutheran Church in Outing. He was a charter member of the Fifty Lakes Sportsman?s Club and he and Betty were members of the Emily-Outing-Fifty Lakes Lions Club. He volunteered at the Food Shelf in Emily for many years. Proud to be a stubborn Norwegian, Chet was a loving and generous man who enjoyed helping others.
Chet will be sadly missed by Betty, his wife; stepchildren Russell (Cheryl) Elzy, Becker, and Lynne (Ron) Zack, Pine City; siblings Thelma (James) Branaugh, Yankton, SD, Thomas Moen, Virginia Oakes, Donna Otterness, Beverly Housker, and Patricia (Ted) Tweito, all of Spring Grove; 8 step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; and 2 brothers, Vernon and Stanley Moen.
