Chester C. Loberg, age 80, of rural Cushing, passed away Sunday evening at his home. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cushing with the Rev. Heather Culuris officiating. Interment will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley. Friends may call from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Thursday at the Randall Funeral Home and for one hour prior to Services at the Church on Friday. Chester Clifford Loberg was born on November 10, 1926, in Wimbledon, ND, the son of Karl and Lena (Matthews) Loberg. As a young boy his family moved to the Cushing area. On his 17th birthday he enlisted in the United States Navy serving his country in the South Pacific Theatre. Chet was stationed aboard the USS West Virginia, the first ship escorting the battleship where the peace treaty with Japan was signed. Following his discharge from the Navy he moved to Minneapolis and worked for several years. On June 18, 1949, he was united in marriage to Betty Packer in Staples. To this union 3 children, Tim, Lorie, and Gail, were born. Following their marriage the couple farmed for a while near Cushing before moving to Minneapolis. In 1957, they returned to the Cushing area where they farmed and he also worked at Camp Ripley. Following several strokes he retired in 1990. Chet was still helping on the farm and able to do yard work at home until this summer. Chet was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Cushing and the V.F.W. Post of Randall. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, especially penny poker after hunting, and his John Deere farm equipment. He was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Lena; and 3 sisters, Martha Schraut, Dorothy Dahlberg, and Myrt Bjerkebek. Chet is mourned in passing by Betty, his loving wife of over 58 years; children, Tim (Ruth) Loberg of Cushing, Lorie (Rod) Tepley of Browerville, and Gail (Jon) Wold of Monticello; 6 grandchildren, Shelley, Heather, Tammy, Ryan, Brady, and Isabella; 3 great grandchildren, Evan, Teagan, and Ian; 2 brothers, Clyde Loberg of Virginia, MN, and Larry (Lorna) Loberg of Motley; and a sister, Jeanette Loberg of Osceola, WI.
