Charles Henry Berns

Charles Henry Berns, 90, of Brainerd passed away on April 28, 2017. Funeral services for Mr. Berns will be held on Thursday, May 4, at 11 AM, at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, with Pastor Jon Gerhls officiating. Charles will be buried next to his wife Elaine at the Baxter Cemetery.

Charlie was born on January 24, 1927 in Perham, Minnesota Leo Berns and Agatha Siebels the third of nine children. He was raised in Perham and worked on the family farm until he was called to duty and joined the Army in 1946, serving in Japan. Charlie married Marie Stoderl on August 8, 1950 in Perham and worked as a meat cutter in Perham and Wadena, later becoming a store manager for National Food Stores in Park Rapids and Brainerd. He was a member of the Meat Cutters Union, and served on the Board of Trustees at church. He enjoyed woodworking in his shop and being Santa Claus at the mall during Christmas season.

Charlie was preceded in death by a stillborn daughter, his parents, a sister Mary and brothers James, John and Jerome and his second wife, Elaine.

Charlie is survived by his ex-wife Marie, sons Francis and Timothy and a daughter, Kathleen, step-daughter Lynn Franz, grandsons Jason, Scott and Joshua and 3 great-grandsons, Jayden, Jackson, Hendrix and great-granddaughter Frankie, a step-grandson Ryan and 3 step-great grandchildren, Anastasia, Thomas and Mavrick. He is further survived by his sisters Catherine (Doll), Rita (Rotta), Leonida (Fritz) and brother Joseph.

A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour before the service at the funeral home.
