Carrol O. Tompkins, age 79, of Brainerd, died Friday morning at the St. Josephs Medical Center in Brainerd. Funeral Services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, June 21, at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. Friends may call from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Tuesday at the Chapel and for one hour prior to Services on Wednesday. Interment will be in Evergreen Hills Cemetery at Staples.
Carrol Owen Tompkins was born on December 15, 1926, in Osakis, MN, the son of Frank and Mildred (Birdsell) Tompkins. He grew up and went to school in the Randall/Cushing area and after his schooling stayed on the family farm to help his parents. On June 20, 1947, he was united in marriage to Donna Bahe in Staples. The couple continued to farm for a while until he went to work for the Post Office in Staples. After moving to Brainerd he worked for George Shanks Standard Station in Brainerd, and then for the Potlatch Paper Company where he worked for 25 years, retiring in 1989. He loved hunting, fishing, and doing mechanical work, which he took pride in doing everything right.
Carrol was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mildred; 3 sons; 1 daughter; 2 brothers, Dale and Loren; and a sister, Harriet. He is mourned in passing by his wife, Donna of Brainerd; daughters, Sherry (Reid) Tollefson of Corsicana, TX, and Tamie (Brad) Herron of Brainerd. 5 Grandchildren, Jesse (Tina) Herron, Adam Herron, Tia Herron, and Hannah Tollefson; and 1 sister, Violet Betts of Little Falls.
