Carl Holderbach, age 87, of Brainerd, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd. Carl Raymond Holderbach was born May 8, 1916 in Staples, to Henry and Hazel (Crandall) Holderbach. He grew up and attended school in Staples. He was very active in athletics, and he played on the State Tournament football team. Following graduation he met and married Helen Zosel, his wife of 66 years. Carl worked for more than thirty years as a conductor for the Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroad. Following retirement he and Helen fully enjoyed their home on Fish Trap Lake near Cushing. Carl continued to water-ski and bicycle well into his seventies. He was a devoted family man and a hard worker, and he will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Carl is survived by his wife Helen; five daughters: Judith Gustafson of Vancouver, WA, Patricia (John) Mathews of Brainerd, Jeanne (Mick) Qualen of Gull Lake, Barbara (Stephen) Praus of Loretto, and Cynthia (Tom) Zulkosky of Maple Plain; a son Michael (Judy) Holderbach of Stillwater; a sister Edith Petree of Staples; 16 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. His parents, two brothers, Howard and Elmer, and two sisters, Laura and Doris, preceded him in death.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, July 22, 1:30 PM, at the Bethany Good Samaritan Chapel, with Reverend Lilja Behr and Reverend Seamus Walsh co-officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples. Memorials are preferred, to Bethany Good Samaritan Village. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
