Bernard Dickey

Bernard Lee Dickey, age 83, of Pequot Lakes, MN, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2013, after a short illness at St. Joseph's Medical Center, Brainerd, MN. He was born in Elkhart, Indiana, on July 14, 1929.

A Marine Corps Sergeant, he was wounded in Korea and returned home to pursue a career in teaching. As an industrial arts teacher in Platteville school system, he provided his students with many more opportunities than the regular curriculum. Bernard loved young people and provided his own children with a wonderful childhood filled with days at the lake in Minnesota, as well as many innovative creations at their Platteville home. After retiring from teaching, he continued his hobbies of building and collecting, taking an interest in everything around him. He enjoyed his summers at his Minnesota lake home and winters in Holiday, Florida. A friend to all creatures great and small, from raising pet raccoons, skunks, squirrels to the wonderful dogs he had, his animals were an important part of his life.

Bernard was a member of several veterans' organizations as well as the Moose and Elks clubs and enjoyed the camaraderie and the dances at each club.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Huehne); daughters: Debra (Denny) Bavery, Con (Martin) Pietz, Dinah Pitcher, Dawn Dickey, Linda (Greg) Pietz; stepchildren: Duane (Cheryl) Huehne, Doug (Anita) Huehne, Deb (Tom) Hamm, Laurie Cruse; 14 grandchildren; 8 step grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Katherine Dickey; wife, Barbara (Newton); son, Dan; and grandson, Spencer Pitcher.

Services will be 2 PM on Friday, July 12, at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be 3:30 PM on Saturday, July 13, at Hillside Cemetery, Platteville.
