Bernard L. Carter, 88, of Brainerd, died Friday, July 5, 2013 at Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby. Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, July 12, 2013 at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter with a visitation one-hour prior. Interment with Military Honors will be held at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley.
Bernie was born September 27, 1924, in Waukee, IA, the son of John and Leona (Codlin) Carter. Following high school, he enlisted in the US Army and served for 3 years during WWII. He married Eleanor C. Walter in 1945. Bernie worked for Pittsburgh Paint for many years, starting in Des Moines, IA, and for most of his career, in the Chicago area. Later he worked briefly for Sandstrom in Rock Island, IL before he and his wife, Eleanor retired to Merrifield. Bernie was very active in the community. He was involved in Brainer SCORE and was extremely dedicated to the Shrine. He spent many hours and drove numerous miles in the Shrine Hospital Van helping families and kids from the area.
He is survived by his children, John B. Carter, of Benton, IL, Alan B. Cater, of Park Ridge, IL, Mary L. Andrews, of Hawaii, Susan Carter Lewis, of Houston, TX, and Linda L. Gardner, of Houston, TX; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Eleanor.
