Benny Jon Sandberg, 73, of Merrifield, passed away Monday, April 19, 2010 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Services for Benny will be at 1:00 PM, Friday, April 23, at Crosslake Lutheran Church in Crosslake with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. Friends are welcome to gather Thursday evening from 5-7 PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church. Memorials preferred.
Benny Jon was born June 13, 1936 in Jasper, MN, the son of Edward and Olga (Lund) Sandberg. Following his graduation from high school in 1954, Benny enlisted in the US Air Force where he honorably served for three and half years. He was united in marriage to Ramona Lentz in 1958. The couple made their home in Southern California for many years where Benny was a sheet metal fabricator. In 1975, they purchased Morningside Resort on Pelican Lake which they owned and operated until 1983. Benny remained self-employed during the following years working in the construction industry.
He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, shooting pool. Benny also liked to attend auctions, travel and camp. He was an avid fan of many sports.
He will be missed by his wife of 51 years, Ramona; his children, Steven (Kelly) Sandberg, of Merrifield, James (Bernadette) Sandberg, of Kimberling City, MO, Mark (Tina) Sandberg, of Olympia, WA, and Tamela (Philip) Long, of Hollister, MO; his sisters, Donna Running and Shannon Simmons; ten grandchildren, Tony, Katie, Maggie, Mesa, Mitchell, Ryan, Arynn, Ren, Svenja, and Benny; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Beverly Jean.
