Barry Bruce Johnson, 77, of Motley, Minnesota

Barry Bruce Johnson, age 77, passed away peacefully at his home in Motley, Minnesota—the place he lovingly called home for many years, on April 12, 2025.

Born in Staples, Minnesota, Barry was the son of George and Lybee Johnson (née Adamek). He grew up in the close-knit community of Verndale and graduated from Verndale High School before bravely answering the call to serve his country. Barry enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served three tours in Vietnam. His courage and sacrifice were recognized with the award of the Purple Heart—three times. A true American hero, he carried the strength and resilience of his service throughout his life.

Following his tours in Vietnam, Barry married the love of his life, Debra (Elliott). Together, they built a quiet and meaningful life. Barry made his career as a long-haul truck driver, traversing the country with dedication and grit. After retiring, he and Debra settled into a peaceful cabin in the woods, where they spent countless hours enjoying nature—watching deer and woodland creatures from their porch and patio window, side by side.

After Debra's passing in 2013, Barry continued to live in the home they had made together, holding on to the memories they had created in their little corner of the world. He found comfort in life’s simple pleasures, especially cheering for his beloved Minnesota Twins from his recliner with an ice-cold glass bottle of Coca-Cola in hand.

Barry will be remembered for his quiet strength, deep devotion, and unwavering love for both his country and his home, and for the love he had for his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lybee; his sister, Lynn (Doug) Sapp; his in-laws, Donnie and Gloria Elliott; and his grandson, Anthony “T.J.” Johnson.

Barry is survived by his sons: Richard (Heather) Johnson of Buffalo, MN, and their children Nicholas (Anna), Christopher, Erika (Ramiro Rivera), and Charles;  Jason (Krista Schardin) Johnson of Verndale, MN, children Jessica, Christina, Brianna Johnson, and grandson Hunter;  Shawn (Kelly) Johnson of Brainerd, MN, and their children Adam, Aubrey, Brady and Cory. In addition, he is survived by several sisters and brother-in-laws and nieces and nephews.

A private interment will happen at a later date.

In honor of Barry’s deep love for animals, the family asks that memorial donations be made to your local animal shelter.
