Avery J. Bates, 85, of Baxter, MN died on Friday, July 10, 2015 at Golden Horizons in Aitkin, MN. Services for Avery will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at 1:00PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, MN with visitation one hour prior to services.
Avery was born on August 23, 1929 in Duluth, MN to Lloyd and Verda (Pletcher) Bates. Avery was united into marriage to Diane Prescott on August 2, 1955 in Northwood, IA. Avery joined the United States Army and worked as a civilian for the United States Navy and Air Force. He worked for the FAA in Minneapolis for 30 years. Avery retired from Fish and Wildlife in Alaska in 1987. Avery and Diane have been residents of the Baxter area for 25 years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of the carving club and the American Legion.
Avery is survived by his wife, Diane of 60 years; children, Patricia (Douglas) Duchene of Lakeville, MN, Micheal (Jeri) Bates of Brainerd, MN, Douglas (Toni) Bates of South St. Paul, MN; grandchildren, Kyle Duchene, Caleb Duchene, Jesse (Alesha) Bates, Megan Bates, Nathan Neil, and Brittany Bates; brothers, Gene Bates of Cloquet, MN, and Larry Bates of Orlando, FL; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Verda; brothers, Vern and Roy; and sister, Mae Hammer. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, MN.
