Cherished for always, Arlyle Louise Grover, 91, unexpectedly but peacefully passed away on Friday, April 2, 2010, in Minneapolis, Minnesota with family members at her bedside.
Born in Spencer, Wisconsin, she grew up on a rural farm during the Great Depression, learning to make do with very little. She attended Stevens Point Teacher's College and taught in rural schools in southern and central Wisconsin before moving to Minneapolis in 1955. Arlie spent the next twenty years teaching at Earle Brown Elementary School in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. In 1980, she and her husband Clifford moved to their home on Gull Lake North of Brainerd, Minnesota, and enjoyed thirty years of retirement. She was an active member of the choir and pioneered mid-week church school at Triune God Lutheran Church in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. At Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes, Minnesota she was a member of the choir and served as a one time president of the Women's Guild.
Arlie loved helping children. She lived what she believed and taught by example, believing that people could do anything if they tried hard enough. She enjoyed traveling, spending the past 13 winters in Phoenix, Arizona, taking pleasure in the road trips back and forth as much as the time in Arizona. She enjoyed boating, fishing, golfing and gardening. Her passion was landscaping with many flowers.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Clifford, parents Daniel and Edna Martens, and her brothers Ray and Roy. Arlie is survived by her younger sister Violet Olson and children: Allen (Linda), James (Frankie), Sharon Andrews (Roy), Vicki Benson (Buzz); Grandchildren: Kim, Shelley, Tami, Kari, Ross, Bryce, Nicole, Drew, Katelyn, Kelly and 13 great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed, but never forgotten. Having so lovingly influenced our lives, she will live on in the hearts of us all.
Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Pequot Lakes, Minnesota on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. Burial service will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 8, 2010.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Child Fund International, 2821 Emerywood Parkway, Richmond, Virginia 23294-3726, to help the less fortunate children of the world.
