Amanda Elizabeth Amy, 92, Pine River, died peacefully Tuesday morning, June 17th, 2008 at her home where she had been cared for by family and Heartland Hospice, Brainerd. Amanda was born March 4, 1916, in Sioux Falls, So Dak., and adopted at 2 weeks by Thomas and Alice Tufteland.
She married Murel Cronk (deceased) and moved from South Dakota to Pine River in 1932. The couple had 2 children, Wenonah (Elaine Cronk) Borman and Kenneth L. Cronk, both of Pine River. She was remarried in 1948 to Clark M. Amy of Pine River. The couple had 2 children, Alison Amy Stephens, Scottsdale, Az and Steven Amy.
Amanda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clark, her son, Steven, and her sister, Mildred.
Amanda began working at age 9 and continued until her death. She was very involved in work, and loved being active in her community, philanthropy, clubwork and her church.
Amanda and her husband, Clark, co-owned and published the Pine River Journal, beginning in the 1950's. She continued as publisher after her husbands death until she sold the paper in 1989. During her newspaper years, she was President of the Minnesota Press Women Organization and the first woman nominated for President of Minnesota Newspaper Association. She also published the State Federated Women's Club newspaper for many years.
Amanda belonged to the Eastern Star for over 50 years, was a member of Eradelphian Club & General Federated Women's Club, a life-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary, a member of the United Methodist Church of Pine River. She belonged to the Pine River Chamber of Commerce and had served on the Boards of St Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd, as well as Whispering Pines/Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Pine River.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth L.. Cronk, her 2 daughters, Wenonah Borman and Alison Amy Stephens (son-in-law, Michael Stuppy), Grandchildren: Richard Everding (Jeannie), Thomas Everding, Cindy Shoecraft (John), Elizabeth Danzik (Dennis), Bryan Nagy, Suzanne Cole, Kelly Jaskowiak, Diane Schmitz (Dan) ,Randall Cronk (Geraldine), Reid Cronk, (Joyce), Kenda Wheeler (Brian), Rachel Walker (Andy), Kathy Moe (Eric), Lisa Jundt (Glen) Mark Englund, Christine Stuppy and Lisa Stuppy. as well as 32 Great-Grandchildren and 18 Great-Great Grandchildren.
Services will be 2 P.M. Monday, June 23rd at First Lutheran Church, Pine River with Methodist Pastor, Lois Hansen officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Pine River. Visitation will be Sunday, June 22nd from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.
