Alfred Howard Carter, 92, of Pine River, MN, passed away at his home on December 25, 2019. He was born September 10, 1927, in Hand County, South Dakota, to Howard and Alta Carter. The Carter family moved to Brainerd when Al was at a young age. He was employed with the Crow Wing Co-op Power & Light (REA) and retired in 1989.
Alfred (Al) enlisted in the Navy in July 1945. He was an active member of the Pine River Legion Post 613 and served as one of the first Commanders. Al was in charge of many events such as the annual steak fry, rib feeds and New Year’s Day Tom & Jerrys. He was a member of the Brainerd VFW, the 40-8 club, and the First Lutheran Church in Pine River. Al retired from the Pine River Fire Department in 1977. He enjoyed hunting, camping and LOVED bingo!
Al is survived by his wife of 73 years, Lorraine (Young); children: Howie (Carin); Sandy (Marty) Heino, Wendy (Al) Shamp; grandchildren: Howard Jr., Bridget, Kyle and Nicole; great-grandchildren: Hedy, Milo, Oliver and Theodore; sister-in-law, Harriet Roberts, whom Al and Lorraine raised; sister, Lorena Larson; sister-in-law, Elaine Parrish; and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Al was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Robert and Alvin; and sisters: Helen, Mabel, Marie and Marion.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, January 12, 2020, at First Lutheran Church, Pine River, with visitation beginning at 1 PM. Luncheon will follow the service at the Pine River Legion. Burial to be held at a later date. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.
